Sammy White led off against Detroit's Steve Gromek with a single.

Gene Stephens singled, sending White to third. Stephens stole second. Tommy Umphlett singled, scoring White and Stephens.

Johnny Lipon struck out. George Kell doubled. Billy Goodman walked, filling the bases.

Jimmy Piersall singled, scoring Umphlett and Kell. Dick Gernert homered, scoring Goodman and Piersall.

Boston reliever Ellis Kinder singled. White walked, and Dick Weik replaced Gromek on the mound. Stephens doubled, scoring Kinder and White.
