Luke Appling

Luke Appling was known as "Ol' Aches and Pains" because he was a reputed hypochondriac. However, all the self-proclaimed ills and injuries seemed to only make Appling play better. A shortstop for the Chicago White Sox for 20 seasons, Appling hit .310 in his major league career and led the American League twice in hitting - with an impressive .388 mark in 1936 and again with a .328 average in 1943. A seven-time American League all-star, Appling collected 2,749 hits during his tenure with the Chisox. At age 75, he hit a home run off fellow Hall of Famer Warren Spahn in the Cracker Jack Old-Timers Game in 1982 at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C.
