Two of baseball's immortals are strikeout king Nolan Ryan and all-time hits leader Pete Rose. Ryan won 324 games and played in the major leagues for a record 27 seasons with four teams - the New York Mets, the California Angels, the Houston Astros, and the Texas Rangers - the cap he choose to wear into the Hall of Fame in 1999. He struck out more than 300 batters in a season six times and led his league in whiffs 11 times. Ryan's records of 5,714 career strikeouts and seven no-hitters will probably never be surpassed. Neither will Rose's record 4,256 career hits he collected in 24 years with the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, and Montreal Expos. Rose, a .303 lifetime hitter, led the National League in batting average three times and won the MVP award in 1973 when he hit .338. Rose had over 200 hits in a season a record 10 times and compiled a National League record 44-game hitting streak in 1978. |
