Player Tribute

Cecil Travis

Cecil Travis played shortstop and third base for 12 years with the Washington Senators from 1933 to '47. In 1941, he finished second to Ted Williams for the American League batting title with a .359 average and led the Junior Circuit in hits with 218 safeties. That year, he also scored 106 runs and collected 101 RBI. He also rapped 19 triples that year. Travis served honorably for nearly four years in World War II in Europe but the time away from the ballpark diminished him of his talents and robbed him of precious seasons in which he possibly could have become a Hall of Famer.
